The big ”V”

Today marks 24 weeks (by my calendar) so I’ve officially hit viability. Not that I want this baby to come anytime soon but it’s a bit of a relief to know if something does happen and I have to deliver early he will actually have a chance.

I had my 24 week appointment yesterday and my fundal height is measuring right on track, so that’s good. I was supposed to do the gestational diabetes screening but I ate grapes so it could have been a bit risky to try. We also had cake at work to celebrate January birthdays (yum). So I’ll do it next week when I have a half day. Hopefully that will not be an issue.

My weight is slightly higher than it should be this time. I’m up 19lbs (12 of that was by 16 weeks…eek). My OB isn’t really worried about it, especially with the history of IUGR, but I am a bit concerned. I do not want to put on too much weight. If I want to stay at 35lbs total I can only gain 16lbs more. With A, I gained 37 or 38lbs so not too shabby. I ate so much at the end trying to get A to gain weight. I now know that doesn’t work, so I will not bother eating too much extra if it happens again.

Next step is the GD test, followed by 28 week appointment, and then the ever important growth scan. I wonder how my fundal height will be measuring in a month. Hopefully all will be perfect!

Hey! Congrats on 24 weeks! I just made 34 weeks and as of last week I had gained 37lbs. It’s funny because I started off the pregnancy 20lbs lighter than I was with BG, but I’ll end at basically the same weight. I wasn’t as sick this time (thanks to my ostomy!) I wanted to limit weight gain to 40lbs, but I’m not restricting myself at all. Docs haven’t given me any sh*t and people keep telling me I look small for 34 weeks, so that takes some of the pressure off. Hope everything keeps going smoothly for you! XOXO

Thank you! Yeah I’m trying to now worry about it and control my eating (easier said than done lol). I can’t believe you’re 34 weeks. Almost there! Hope you’re doing well!

So far so good! That’s awesome. I put on weight more quickly with number two but did manage to halt the progress and keep it in check with careful eating. I didn’t have to be too strict, just not crazy. So you can if you need to. It does work! Congrats on the big V. Such a great milestone x

This all sounds so wonderful, and I am so happy for you! I don’t know about you, but breastfeeding takes weight off like crazy for me, so I just didn’t stress about weight gain this time around and it was fine. Have you read Expecting Better, by Emily Oster? She talks about the research on weight gain in there — basically, there are significant downsides to the baby if you don’t gain enough weight, but almost no risks if you gain too much weight. Only issue is that you might have a harder time losing it after the fact (but… breastfeeding!). Definitely not worth stressing over a few extra pounds. Keep up the good work, you and Lucky! He’ll be here before you know it!

I did lose weight with breastfeeding but I didn’t drop the last 5-10lbs until I stopped. I guess I needed the fat to make the milk? I did read expecting better but a long time ago so I forgot about that part. Thank you for the reminder, makes me feel better! Hope things are going well for you!

Yay for 24 weeks. It’s probably a good thing I never got pregnant because I have a hard enough time not eating too much or junk. I would’ve totally used the excuse the baby wants it, lol. Praying everything continues to go smoothly for you!
